A 35-year old biologist complained of elaborate cleaning and washing rituals. He was feared about contracting or spreading HIV virus to others via his bodily waste or secretions (especially urine, feces, saliva, and semen). Hence his rituals included elaborate handwashing, prolonged and stereotyped showers and lengthy wiping and cleaning toilet rituals after using. The thought that he might contract HIV or that he might spread it to others dominated his waking hours and he felt safe only when he was home washing something.
