The term ‘prediabetes’ refers to impaired glucose metabolism not fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of type 2 diabetes. The American Diabetology Association defines prediabetes based on the criteria — impaired fasting glucose (IFG): fasting plasma glucose 5.6–6.9 mmol/l; impaired glucose tolerance (IGT): 2 h glucose during a 75 g OGTT 7.8–11.0 mmol/l; or HbA1c in the range of 39–47 mmol/mol (5.7–6.4%). Prediabetes, highly prevalent worldwide (88 million adults in 2022), poses a high risk of progression to overt type 2 diabetes. Hence addressing prediabetes is crucial as it represents a window period wherein the modifiable risk factors, such as obesity, diet, and lifestyle, can be targeted to prevent or delay the development of type 2 diabetes.
