A fire broke out in a newborn care hospital in Delhi last month, tragically killing six newborns. The person who worked at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the time was a 26-year-old Ayurvedic doctor who had completed a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery degree and was licensed to practice only in Haryana. During a bail hearing, a Delhi court was shocked to learn that an Ayurvedic doctor was working at the NICU. The court found his arguments highly insensitive. He argued that the newborns died due to suffocation, not the fire.
He further asserted that he was working at the hospital as a trainee to learn about allopathic medicine.
