Age related macular degeneration causes irreversible loss of vision in elderly. Treatment includes laser therapy and medications which halt the progress of the disease. Age related macular degeneration is a degenerative disease of the central part of retina that leads to irreversible vision loss in the elderly. The condition affects people over the age of 50 years and the prevalence increases exponentially with each decade. The highest incidence among Indian population is seen between 60 to 79 years with a prevalence of 1.2% in individuals above 60 years.
