Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Jodhpur have successfully treated four patients suffering from a rare, drug-resistant form of epilepsy known as gelastic seizures or “laughter epilepsy” using a minimally invasive neurosurgical procedure that avoided open brain surgery. The patients three children aged 5, 8 and 9, and a 25-year-old man had been experiencing frequent, uncontrollable laughing episodes caused by a deep-seated brain lesion called hypothalamic hamartoma, in some cases leading to as many as 10 to 20 seizures a day and significantly disrupting daily life.
