A team of doctors from Al Qassimi Hospital for Women and Children in Sharjah, UAE has successfully removed a massive 1.5 kg tumor from a 2-day-old newborn. The baby girl was suffering from a rare congenital tumor known as Sacrococcygeal Teratoma. Sacrococcygeal teratoma is a condition in which a tumor develops right before birth and grows from a baby’s coccyx. It occurs in one out of every 35,000 births and can be fatal . Its prevalence is more pronounced in females than in males .
They are often found to grow massive in nature ; however, they are usually not malignant and can be surgically removed after birth. Surgeries for congenital defects are often very risky.
