Aortic dissection is the tearing of the inner layer of the aorta due to the weakening of the aortic wall. It leads to blood flow into the inner and middle layers of the aorta. Hypertension, atherosclerosis, and aortic aneurysm are some of the common risk factors of aortic dissection. Approximately 5 to 30 aortic cases per one million people are reported annually. Imaging techniques including TEE, MRI, and CT are used to diagnose aortic dissection.
Less severe cases of aortic dissection can be treated with medications, including beta-blockers, while severe cases can be treated with graft replacement and endovascular-stent repair.
