Rickets is the impairment in mineralization of the epiphyseal plates. It is most commonly caused by vitamin D deficiency and rarely caused by calcium and phosphorus deficiency, genetic defects, drugs that disrupt vitamin D metabolism, and liver diseases. Thickened ankles and wrists, growth failure, muscle weakness, waddling gait, leg bowing, and bone pain are characteristics of rickets. Over 20 acquired or congenital forms of rickets have been reported so far. Among them, nutritional rickets is a preventable disease.

Vitamin D treatment can improve bone pain, metaphyseal swelling, bow legs, and knock knee. However, timely diagnosis and intense treatment strategy are important in treating rickets.
