A multidisciplinary team of 20 doctors from the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City ( SKMC) , Abu Dhabi successfully performed a challenging medical procedure on a baby boy while he was still in his mother’s womb. According to the surgeons at SKMC, this was only for the third time that such a surgery had been conducted in Abu Dhabi. The baby was suffering from a rare congenital anomaly, known as cystic hygroma . In this condition, there is a blockage in the lymphatic system, and this often leads to the development of a fluid-filled sac in the neck or head, or in any parts of the body.
In this case, the baby in utero developed a massive 700 gm cyst on his neck weighing almost 25 percent of the baby’s weight. The cyst was so big that it risked blocking the infant’s airways.
