The two natural sources of it are balanced diet and sunlight exposure. This article and the landmark study on Vitamin D suggest the deficiency as an indicator sign of subclinical malnutrition in India.

Vitamin D deficiency is multifactorial in etiology; the etiology varies from place to place and person to person.
