Aster CMI Hospital Bangalore performed Asia’s first liver transplant surgery using Normothermic Machine Perfusion. In this process, the liver can be kept alive outside the body for 24 hours by maintaining body temperature.

The perfusion technology is a standard clinical practice which allows the physician to check liver functioning before transplant. The organ transplant success rate in India is low as compared to developed countries, due to the functionality of organs deteriorating during the preservation stage that last up to 12-24 hours.
