In order to enhance the security of doctors, hospital administrators have tightened the security at the hospital premises. As a result, a number of visits by relatives of patients have dropped down as guards make passes mandatory for entry. Amidst the violent attacks against doctors, the Maharashtra State Security Corporation (MSSC) has enforced 700 armed guards to provide tough security outside Mumbai hospitals. However, the deans of these hospitals have had to pacify visitors enraged at being denied entry.
The MSSC guards took charge on April 1 after resident doctors went on a strike for a week to protest against attacks on them across the State. The guards are authorized by the police to make arrests and use a weapon. On this background, the dean of hospital stated that, “This is a good procedure to follow.
