Use of five common classes of antibiotics in early pregnancy increases the risk of spontaneous miscarriage, says a recent study published in ‘Canadian Medical Association Journal’. These 5 classes of antibiotics are- Macrolides (excluding erythromycin) Quinolones Tetracyclines Sulfonamides Metronidazole Antibiotics are widely used during pregnancy but evidence regarding their fetal safety is limited. This study was aimed to quantify the association between antibiotic exposure during pregnancy and risk of spontaneous abortion . Study Population 182 369 pregnancies were included in this study, out of which, 8702 (4.7%) ended with a clinically detected spontaneous abortion.
