Bariatric surgery (BS) is associated with a reduced CVD risk and morbidity in obese patients. However, the impact of BS on patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and obesity is unexplored. A study investigated the effect of BS on major CVD events in such patients.
Adults with obesity (n=9,374, BMI ≥ 35) and NAFLD were 1:1 randomized into the BS group (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy) and the nonsurgical control group. The BS group showed a significantly lower risk of new-onset heart failure (HR, 0.60), composite cardiovascular events (HR, 0.53), composite cerebrovascular events (HR, 0.59), composite coronary artery interventions (HR, 0.47), and mortality (HR, 0.56) , as compared to the control group. BS in patients with NAFLD and obesity significantly lowered the risk of major adverse cardiovascular outcomes and 1-, 3-, 5- and 7-year all-cause…
