The Dubai Health Authority has recently clarified brain death rules to facilitate organ transplant in the UAE. The policy was drafted to ensure improved diagnosis and efficient reporting of brain death in accordance with the worldwide standards and international best practices. As per the new draft, the process of brain death will be carried out six hours after an event has induced coma in a patient. The consent of a guardian/custodian is not mandatory while declaring a patient as ‘brain dead’, or deciding to withdraw life-saving equipment from a patient.
Likewise, no consent is required from a patient’s guardian to repeat the procedure of brain death assessment.
