An analysis of cataract surgeries performed in Tamil Nadu between 2012 and 2023 has found that women generally receive cataract treatment later than men, leading to poorer post-operative vision. The study also examined sociological trends in cataract surgeries and observed that insurance coverage and government support for these procedures increased from 4.4% in 2012 to 28.7% in 2023. Although female patients underwent cataract surgeries approximately two years earlier than male patients, they presented with worse vision, suggesting an earlier onset of cataracts.
Additionally, women tended to spend less on intraocular lenses compared to men. A similar pattern was found in a previous study conducted in Hyderabad, which found that fewer girls received surgeries than boys (60 vs 109).
