Effect on CBF and CMRO2(Cerebral oxygen consumption): Propofol produces a dose-related reduction in both cerebral blood flow (CBF) & CMRO2. The pattern of regional blood flow ( rCBF) is different for Propofol and pentothal. Using positron emission tomography (PET) in adult volunteers, Propofol has been shown to decrease rCBF in the anterior brain regions, whereas thiopentone decreases rCBF primarily in the cerebellar and posterior brain regions.
A disadvantage of a large bolus dose of Propofol is a reduction in the MAP, which can decrease CPP.
