In recent years, linagliptin is added to incretin-based therapies to treat Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Unlike other dipeptidyl peptidases 4 inhibitors, linagliptin can be used without dose adjustment in renal impairment patients. The European Association for the Study of Diabetes and American Diabetes Association guidelines suggested using linagliptin as first-line agents in people who did not tolerate metformin for the management of T2DM.

Besides, linagliptin enhances insulin secretion, decreases glucagon production, slows gastric emptying, promotes satiety, and reduces appetite than other incretin-based therapies.
