The Union Cabinet has approved ₹14930 crores budget to set up 24 new government medical colleges and increase the UG and PG medical seats by 18,058. The govt is also going to set up 248 nursing and midwifery schools. To increase the availability of qualified doctors, the Cabinet gave approval to increase of 10,000 MBBS seats and 8058 PG seats by 2020-21.
Besides, the already existing 58 and new 24 medical colleges would give rise to 8200 MBBS seats. The govt plans to ensure at least one medical college for every 3-5 parliamentary constituencies and at least one government medical colleges in the state.
