Calcium supplements are routinely taken for maintaining bone health, but recent studies are suggesting that they may raise the risk of plaque build-up in arteries and damage heart. However, the cause-effect relationship between these two factors is still unclear. A recently published study which involved a follow-up of 10 years in about 3000 participants from the age group 45 to 84 (51% female) from various ethnicity.

Interestingly, the same study also found that those who were consuming dietary calcium (from calcium-rich food products) did not develop cardiovascular diseases. In your experience, have you noticed increased risk of cardiovascular diseases in people who consume calcium supplements? Why do you think there is difference between dietary calcium and calcium supplements?
