Hyperandrogenism, hepatic steatosis (HS), and insulin resistance are characteristics of polycystic ovary syndrome ( PCOS ). Essential amino acid (EAA) supplementation is known to reduce HS in different populations. A clinical trial has examined whether EAA supplementation can reduce HS in 21 adolescents (mean age = 15.6 years) with PCOS and obesity (BMI = 37.3 Β± 6.5 kg/m 2 ). The participants consumed 7.5 g of EAA twice daily for four weeks, followed by a four-week washout.
The second intervention phase continued with the consumption of EAA for another four weeks. The EAA supplementation significantly reduced HS (8%) and plasma aspartate aminotransferase (8%), triacylglycerol (TG; 9%), and very low-density lipoprotein β TG (21%) in the participants compared to placebo. However, EAA supplementation did not change body weight and insulin sensitivity compared to placebo. This studyβ¦
