Photobiomodulation with 670 nm red light increases mitochondrial respiration and ATP production and thus increases glucose demand. A study has investigated whether 670 nm light treatment can decrease blood glucose levels in 30 healthy individuals after consuming 75 g glucose in 150 ml of water. In the study, the participants received 670 nm light to their upper back region for 15 min, 45 min before consuming glucose. Compared to the placebo group, 15-minute exposure to 670 nm light reduced blood glucose levels by 27.7%.

The light exposure also reduced the spike in blood glucose levels by 7.5%. This study suggests that photobiomodulation can be utilized to decrease blood glucose spikes after meals and may reduce the damaging effects of blood glucose fluctuations on the body.
