Afamin, the vitamin-E binding glycoprotein has recently been found to be associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), prediabetes, and insulin resistance. The researchers now have confirmed that plasma concentration of afamin can be measured to assess the risk of diabetes. T2DM and prediabetic conditions are largely involved in comorbidities like cardiovascular diseases. Hence, the detection of early risk factors has major significance. In recent studies, afamin has been found to effective to serve this purpose. Afamin is predominantly expressed in the liver.
