A team of doctors from the Burjeel Hospital, Abu Dhabi recently performed a rare catheter-based surgery to repair a leaky heart valve in a 28-year-old patient. According to the operating interventional cardiologist, such a surgery has been performed across the UAE for only four to five times till date. Prior to the surgery, the patient had his mitral valve replaced by a metallic prosthetic valve 14 years ago . However, after all these years, the patient lately started to complain about shortness of breath and palpitations.

During the subsequent investigation, it was found that the prosthetic valve was detached from the sutures, thereby creating a leak . Due to this leak, the blood was flowing to the heart chamber in a retrograde direction , which can potentially damage the cardiac muscles over due course of time.
