The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) identified 220 not-of-standard-quality (NSQ) drug samples and one spurious drug sample during its August drug surveillance exercise. Of the failed samples, 29 were identified by central drug laboratories and 191 by state drug testing laboratories. NSQ medicines are products that fail to meet specified quality standards or parameters, including requirements related to labeling, dissolution, weight uniformity, and sterility.

Some defective products may also be categorized as adulterated or spurious, which can have the potential to cause serious adverse reactions and, in severe cases, death.
