Recurrent abdominal pain is very common health issue among children. Recent study has shown an increase in prevalence of celiac disease among patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Study was conducted over 6 year period in a tertiary referral center for diagnosis and follow-up of gastrointestinal disorders in Italy. In this study, abdominal pain related issues of 992 children were evaluated.
To determine the correlation between IBS and celiac disease, concentrations of IgA, IgA anti-tissue transglutaminase, and endomysial antibodies were measured, and duodenal biopsy was performed in cases of antibody detection. The results indicated that the prevalence of celiac disease was 4 times higher in children with IBS as compared to the general pediatric population.
