Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG) , commonly known as Trench Mouth or Vincent’s stomatitis , is a painful and rapidly destructive disorder of the gingiva. The characteristic feature includes crater-like lesions of the papillary gingiva. ANUG can be diagnosed at the onset of clinical symptoms. It differs from other periodontal diseases due to its typical presentation of interdental necrosis. The treatment of ANUG differs from case to case and often involves a multifactorial and interprofessional team approach.

Recognizing the disease and its timely management can help in dealing with ANUG effectively. Here we present the history, evaluation, differential diagnosis, and management of patients with ANUG.
