Mpox has affected 85,800 individuals and caused 93 deaths across 110 countries since 2022. Among them, 38–58% were HIV patients. Now, a study published in The Lancet determined the clinical characteristics of mpox among patients with HIV and low CD4 cell counts (<350 cells/mm 3 ). Out of 382 patients from 19 countries, 91% (349) had HIV infection, and among them, 65% (228) were on ART.
CD4 cell count was <100 cells/mm3 in 22% (85) of patients and 100–200 cells/mm 3 in 25% (94) of patients. Necrotizing skin lesions, lung involvement , secondary infections, and sepsis were reported more in patients with <100 CD4 cells/mm 3 than in patients with >300 CD4 cells/mm 3 . Deaths among hospitalized patients (27/107) were associated with <200 CD4 cells/mm 3 and high HIV load .
