Globally, the estimated annual incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) is 1.3 million, making it the third most common cancer in males and the second most common cancer in females. In India, the annual incidence rates for colon cancer and rectal cancer in men are 4.4 and 4.1 per 100000, respectively. The prevalence for colon cancer in women is 3.9 per 100000. Colon cancer ranks 8th and rectal cancer 9th among men.
Colorectal carcinoma is exceptionally rare in children, adolescents and young adults with an incidence of only about 1 per million below 20 years of age. However, available data indicate a steady rise in incidence, due to result of increasing urbanization and changing lifestyles and dietary patterns.
