I should be honest first of all that, I am an Ophthalmologist. In last few years I had noted hundred of cases of unnecessary cataract Surgeries. In our primitive stages of Ophthalmology training in 1980s, indication of Cataract surgery was a Mature Cataract. Mature was the stage of Cataract where visual acuity was less than Finger counting close to face. Gradually we had reached the stage of Phacoemulsification.

Phaco surgery is almost impossible in a Mature cataract. On the other hand most of the patients are not willing to wait till the crippling reduction of vision. And Phaco Surgery is easier in immature cataracts. But most unfortunately, there is a trend, particularly in the Corporate Hospitals to operate on the very early and even no Cataract cases. Should we fix a limit of visual impairment to advice a Cataract Surgery?
