An acquaintance of mine is a retired pathologist and wants to set up a small lab. When he approached his clinician friends they frankly told him that they get 50 to 70% bribe when they send patients to a lab for investigations advised by them. They also said that they will send patients only if he will pay this money, or else they will specifically ask their patients to have their investigations done from the laboratory which is already giving them this bribe. He requested them that he wants to help poor patients get their investigations done at a cheaper rate.
He also contacted some of his colleagues who also do CT and MRI. They told him that this is the prevalent practice everywhere in our country.
