Crohn's disease is an autoimmune disorder that affects gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The first line of treatment recommended by the gastroenterologist is administration of corticosteroids. Corticosteroids are extremely effective in inducing clinical remission in patients with active CD.

However chronic use of corticosteroids has side effects involving nearly every major body system. Thus, the corticosteroids  should be used with caution and under close monitoring, especially when other risk factors are involved (For e.g., Pregnancy, Children, Elderly patients etc.) Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), (ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD)), once thought to be uncommon, is now seen highly prevalent in India.
