In case a patient is shifted from one emergency to the ward and patient dies on the way, who should write the death certificate? Our hospital is a small government hospital. We do not have any emergency beds. EMO admits or OPD MO admits whenever they feel patients needs admission. Patients are carried to the ward by relatives. Frequently we find patients are dead when they are brought to the ward from emergency.

Now should ward MO register the dead body and declare death or body should be sent to EMO for declaration and for other formalities? This is a medico-legal issue and I want clear guideline if any. Can a doctor admit a dead body in the ward for declaration of death and ask for postmortem?
