Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) injury is reported in most patients following dislocation. There is an increased interest in repair or reconstruction of the MPFL for patients experiencing recurrent instability. The femoral attachment of the MPFL is critical in determining graft behavior after reconstruction. This article reviews the anatomy of the MPFL with a focus on its femoral insertion site.
The MPFL is a very important knee ligament that is torn or stretched when the kneecap is dislocated. Research findings have reported the injury to the MPFL in 95% to 100% of patients following acute dislocation.
