In January 2020, the Delhi govt. in association with the Delhi State Health Mission have launched a newborn screening scheme known as Neonatal Early Evaluation Vision (NEEV) , under the Rashtriya Baal Swasthya Karyakram. NEEV has been launched to tackle the visible, functional, and metabolic defects such as congenital hypothyroidism, critical congenital heart diseases, and hearing loss in the pre-emptive phase.
As a part of the program, newborns will be screened for clinically evident diseases and treated to ensure early treatment and better quality of life in their growing years. The officials mentioned that the program will be started at 31 birthing facilities and would be implemented at most of the government hospitals to reduce the high mortality and morbidity associated with the congenital disease burden.
