Metformin is often prescribed as the first line of therapy in patients suffering from Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus . However, long-term use of metformin has been frequently associated with clinical and biochemical vitamin B12 deficiency . Vitamin B 12 has a number of hemopoietic, neuro-cognitive and cardiovascular functions and is hence an essential micronutrient. Deficiency of vitamin B12 can lead to complications like peripheral neuropathy , which if untreated, can lead to serious complications like ulcerations and amputations.
