Diabetic retinopathy progresses through stages, starting with mild non-proliferative retinopathy, where small blood vessels in the retina weaken and form microaneurysms. As it advances to moderate and severe non-proliferative retinopathy, more blood vessels become blocked, reducing blood flow to the retina. In the proliferative stage, new, fragile blood vessels grow, which can leak blood and cause retinal detachment or glaucoma. Treatment options include laser therapy, injections of anti-VEGF drugs, and, in severe cases, vitrectomy surgery.
