The recent move by the government, to scrap the MCI and to install the National Medical Commission does not come as a surprise. Although the Government justifies this move and the appointment of the NITI Ayog based on the charges of rampant corruption, the main reasons seem very different. The MCI has always been a barrier for the Government's "Integrated Health course" . The govt. sees this course as a fix-it-all for the nation's ailing health related issues.
Once the National Medical Council takes over ( incidentally none of the members of this commission are qualified doctors) , the course can be formulated and implemented.
