All of us are aware of the Medical Termination Of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, that does not allow abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy. In this regard, a woman is filing a petition asking for the abortion of her 26 weeks fetus which has abnormalities. However, every women or family going through the same situation cannot approach the court to seek permission. Many women fear the newspapers and news channels discussing and debating their private and emotional matter so openly.
In 2014, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare also proposed an amendment to this MTP act. Many gynecologists believe that the period between 20 weeks and 22 weeks offers good opportunities to check for cardiac fetal anomalies and hence the extension of MTP to 24 weeks is necessary.
