It's remarkable how quickly the public perception of the medical profession has deteriorated in one generation. There used to be a time when doctors were held in high regard, and the cleverest students chose to do medicine, not because it paid well, but because it was a highly respected profession. Doctors got immense personal satisfaction from helping their patients to get better, and never compared their income with businessmen, executives and traders. Doctors were financially comfortable, but none of them expected to make a lot of money because that was never their primary goal when they chose to take up medicine as a career.
