Many people suffer from obesity due to a genetic mutation, reported in MC4R gene which is an appetite regulating gene. Common treatment like diet and surgery carry limited benefits for these patients and have poor long-term effects. A study conducted at University of Copenhagen claims that such type of obesity can be treated with Liraglutide, a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist.
This medicine also helps in controlling blood sugar levels and might have a positive effect on diabetes often seen in genetically determined obesity.
