A team of surgeons at the Rashid Hospital, Dubai, recently performed a 9-hour long surgery to reattach the severed arm of a 33-year old engineer. The patient’s arm got severed after a metallic cable from a lift crashed on his left forearm. Following the incident, the severed arm was recovered by his colleagues. The patient was initially given a first-aid to stem the flow of blood and thereafter, was rushed to the hospital to provide further emergency care.
The severed arm was immediately maintained in ‘cold ischemia,’ and the doctors performed the reattachment surgery within 1 hour of the incident. To carry out the procedure, the doctors first restored blood supply to the main artery, followed by repairment of the arm bone using metal plates and screws. The patient was later discharged from the hospital in good health. Source: The National
