Head injury accounts for a significant proportion of emergency department visits and around 50% of trauma deaths are due to a head injury. Complications and mortality rates increase if definitive therapy is delayed. Therefore, the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) have published a clinical guideline in 2009 for early management of patients with a head injury.
