Researchers from Quebec Research Center and the University of California reviewed the published studies investigating the impact of bariatric surgery on bone health. It was found that weight loss surgery can lead to deterioration in bone mass and strength, increasing the risk of fractures. The findings indicate that skeletal changes occur early after surgery and continue even after the body weight has stabilised. Experts have proposed various potential mechanisms such as nutritional factors, mechanical unloading, hormonal factors, and body composition.
