With the rising voice of several state medical council and doctor's fora against the quacks practicing in the different part of the country, Tamilnadu Medical Council (TNMC) has taken an innovative initiative to track down unregistered practitioners operating in the state. At present, around 1.3 lakh doctors are registered with the TNMC. Over the past two years, the statutory body has reported around 45 quacks to police.
According to an estimate by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), there are more than 3,000 quacks still practicing across Tamil Nadu. The cadre includes self-proclaimed traditional healers, unlicenced practitioners of Indian medicine and physiotherapists who prescribe a variety of medicines to their patients, including injections for pain, inflammatory drugs, anti-diabetic drug, cardiovascular drugs and antidepressants without even a minimum training for such…
