Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols are evidence-based perioperative protocols developed to reduce surgical stress response in patients, optimize physiologic function, and improve patient recovery. ERAS focuses on perioperative counseling, anti-emetic prophylaxis, multimodal analgesia, and decreased preoperative fasting. Head and neck cancer have a poor prognosis and a high rate of perioperative complications that can be overcome with ERAS.
