This paper was sent to Seventh European Congress on Hypertension in 1993. The paper reads as: Hypothesis : Baroreceptors act depending on the pressure transmitted by the blood flowing through the carotid arteries. When there is a deposition of atherosclerotic material in the endothelium, the baroreceptors are not properly receiving the pressure and so the heart pumping is set at a higher pressure level (i.e) Baroreceptors are stimulated due to low transmitted pressure. So, the heart receives signals for higher ejection pressure.

That increased the systolic pressure as age advances and explains essential systolic hypertension and of old age.
