Singles is caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox-causing virus varicella zoster. Now, the US FDA has recently approved a new kind of shingles vaccine that has been proved to be highly effective and beneficial for the patients. Earlier, only one vaccine was approved that was a live vaccine and was recommended to be given to adults who are aged 60 and above. The new vaccine is a non-live vaccine that combines antigen and adjuvants and recommended for individuals aged 50 and older.
The efficacy of this new vaccine has been proved in a Phase III clinical trial with more than 38,000 individuals. According to the researchers, 90% efficacy has been demonstrated in these clinical studies.
