About a thousand foreign doctors are given temporary permission to do various procedures like live surgery demonstrations in India each year. This year, 676 foreign doctors have already been given permission. The Medical Council of India (MCI), which recommends to the health ministry that permission be given, said it does not have information about how many such permissions were being used to do live surgeries (surgery that is broadcast live to an audience of surgeons, usually during surgical conferences via a video link from the operation theatre).
