The World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested that the manufacture of fireworks should be forbidden in order to avoid injuries caused by firework. Firecracker injuries can cause serious and irreparable damage to vision. In developing countries, eye injuries caused by fireworks account for 22% of overall eye trauma on average and are therefore a major cause of visual disability. Fireworks cause many severe eye injuries, resulting in declined visual acuity or vision loss.

In India, firecracker injuries are common during the festival of ‘DIWALI’ where traditionally; firecrackers form an essential part of the celebrations. Many of children lose their eye sight (as well as cosmetic disfigurement) due to these festival related eye injury in India.
